Having a single child barely counts as parenting
I know this is going to anger a lot of parents of singles, but it's true, when you have your second kid you'll realize how right I am
And it's not until you have your third and are outnumbered that you attain full parent status
When we were married but hadn't had children yet my wife wanted to call us a family, and I pushed back
The concept of a family is like the concept of a heap: there's no clearly defined point where adding a single grain of sand turns a non-heap into a heap, yet we recognize heaps
So it is with family
As they grow generationally, they become fuller versions of themselves
The fullest expression of family is multigenerational and expansive
Some of you will never know the joy of watching your kids run around with a giant pack of cousins and that's sad
I have a pet theory that smaller family sizes is a primary driver in blank slate ideology
When you have a single child you can indulge almost any theory about how you shaped them
When you have multiple, it's impossible to deny: they're different from birth
