The most challenging thing for Google ads beginners:
Keyword Research.
Do it wrong, you waste money.
Do it right, you profit.
Give me 2 minutes and I'll break it down for you:
🧡
(Even a 5-year old would understand)
Let's say, you have a toy store.
And you want to advertise your toys to people searching for them on the internet.
Keyword research helps you find the right:
- Words
- Phrases
... that people use to search for the toys.
We would use these to make our ad show up when they look for toys.
We start by....
1) Thinking about the types we sell.
Write a list of words that describe the toys:
- Lego
- Dolls
- Brand name
- Action figures
- Board games
Then we use this list to...
2) Plug the Words Into Google Keywords Planner
or other tools like Spyfu.
You want to look for words and phrases that have:
- Over 1000 monthly searches
- Related
These are what we call our target keywords.
Because you want to sell, and not teach people about the toys...
3) Focus on Buying Intent Keywords
Ignore phrases with:
- "Tools for..."
- "How to..."
- "Best..."
These are phrases people use to find information, not to buy.
4) Choose a Targeting Strategy
Broad match will get more visitors to your online store but may not be buyers.
I recommend to start with Phrase and Exact match.
5) Make Everything Relevant
At this point, we have a list of target keywords.
Now you want to increase chances of people clicking your ad so they go on your website.
You do this by matching:
- Your offer
- Landing page
- Ad copywriting
to the phrases.
The more relevant your ads are, the more Google will prioritize them in the search results.
6) Keep track
Finally, make sure to check how your ad is doing.
Checking how many people click on it
Check how many people buy your toys.
If you see that your ad is not working well, change your ads and try again.
That’s everything.
