Interesting thread pushing back against the common belief that regulation killed nuclear power back in the 80s.
@jasoncrawford @JimPethokoukis This may be of interest!
The alternative theory he proposes is that deregulation of electricity markets made it impossible for utilities to make long-term investments. This would explain why France was able to keep building nuclear when other countries stopped.
Nuclear's problem (which will also affect fusion btw) is not just cost, but cost *structure*. It takes a very very long time to pay off, and you have to buy a ton of it all at once.
This is why nuclear needs government financing in order to work.
Nuclear advocates often fancy themselves as libertarians -- they tell themselves that if government simply steps out of the way, nuclear plants will spring up around the country like mushrooms after the rain.
But no. Only government can finance nuclear.
