This is a very tangled web of confusion, even for Twitter. According to this postdoc, sex is a many-splendored thing:
"Sex" names our observation of correlations. But also "sex" names those correlations. And sex is a human idea, and a mental model, and a social construct...
But sex isn't any of those things.
The proof is that sexual reproduction involving males and females has been happening on this planet far longer than even trees have existed, let alone observations, those correlations, or any ideas, models, or societies at all.
Sexual reproduction involving males and females is a real natural phenomenon. It's an ancient evolutionary strategy. We named it, but we didn't invent it. We didn't construct it. If anything, it constructed us! 😁
One more thought, about this idea. True, we don't inspect gametes when deploying "male" or "female." Nevertheless, sex may just be a matter of gametes. After all, we don't inspect protons when deploying "gold." But gold just is the element with 79 protons
