2005 collegehumor video (not a good thing)
the lady going 'wtf cringe line o_0' is lame I'm not gonna like this sorry
exactly what I mean. you're willfully deluding yourself if you think it's "played straight". it's really obviously "lol, remember that cringe rap theme?" i.e. 2000s internet cynicism but without the appeal of an old seanbaby article and unfitting for mario
a lot of people go "what does he mean... wtf o_0" & "uhm sir, SIR, you DO realize..." at my tweets cuz I don't completely spell out my points. the fact that it's parodying a cheesy 80s rap is why it feels like a millennial comedy skit
yeah I get that like those actual plumbing commercials with dick jokes that became a meme. still feel it's too cynical for mario esp when applied to the protag
this is maybe as cynical/parodic as nintendo mario got and it still didn't have that "ummm, riiiight" vibe, didn't feel like a direct reference to any specific thing, and mario wasn't the butt of the joke
big difference between "funny cartoon character" and "um, riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight 🙄" it's not the same brand of silliness at all
starting to realize cynical self-awareness is so deeply engrained in US culture it's become the default human behavior & people don't even take note of it. it's just seen as "being funny & charming" & no one consciously acknowledges the irony
the self-distanced "attitude" faces, the head-bobbing, the ironic use of sunglasses, the actress going "ummm, corny much?" it's this detached self-distance mixed with a smug acknowledgement of media "tropes" that screams millennial america
mario & luigi look extremely self-aware & detached in their expressions & body language. if it were a Nintendo game they would 100% earnestly try to look cool and it would be way funnier!
everyone knows "the Dreamworks face", but what do you think it represents? why is it common
it doesn't clearly define any genuine emotion & it's not a face someone naturally makes. it's a contrived "goofy but cool" expression to show that you're self-distanced; intentionally silly but chill about it, not taking yourself or the situation seriously cuz you're above it all
really @NanoAugJensen helped me realize the bit also fails on that level. Mario & Luigi don't even look like they're giving an emotionally honest "YEAHHHH THIS IS GONNA BE THE BEST AD EVER" performance so the negative reaction isn't funny.
they already look like they're TRYING to be goofballs, not like they're unintentional goofballs
i'm enjoying the trigun manga
