Democracy and diversity has made healthy paternalism difficult. So there are people who can use drugs like cocaine recreationally. They’re high-status professionals with firm self control. A whole lot of people can’t do this. So upper crust forgoes insignificant pleasure….

…for the greater good of society, and even criminalizes the production and distribution of substance that overwhelms many people. Something similar is at play with porn - some people watch for 5 minutes, others will spend days and days on it…

…but now there is no solidarity, no sense that an upper class should call shots that require them also to abstain from, or at least be discrete about, certain pleasures. So rich whites legalize drugs so they can avoid fear of arrest getting high in garage…

…and if this devastates other communities - they simply don’t care. They even claim the moral high ground of ‘decriminalizing a victimless crime’ - which actually has thousands of victims - when it’s really hedonism and abandonment of social responsibility.
