Japan's MRJ regional jet project has recently been cancelled. It was due to sabotage by the US.
This🧵also compares China and Japan's different approaches to building a civilian aerospace industry.
According to Mitsubishi.
Most of the problem was related to difficulties in obtaining the Type Certificate for the MRJ from the US FAA.
The Japanese were rather polite in their accusatory tone against the US
A Type Certificate (airworthiness) is needed for civilian passenger aircraft to operate in different countries.
The main Type Certificate issuer are US FAA and EU's EASA.
China's CAAC is also important.
This isn't the first time Japanese industry was sabotaged by the Americans.
The Plaza Accord and tariff wars against Japanese products in the 1980s were the main factors to Japan's economic stagnation.
One of the many perks of being an US colony
An independent Type Certificate issuance process forms the foundation to an independent aerospace industry.
Japan's aerospace industry is heavily embedded into the Boeing supply chain.
They make 35% of the parts that goes into the Boeing 787 and 21% of parts in the Boeing 777
Japan's approach, is to build an aerospace industry by starting with component parts.
China's approach to Civilian aerospace industry, is to build the ecosystem first, with foreign suppliers.
As the Chinese industry matures, foreign parts will be replaced by Chinese components
So which one is more successful?
China's approach, of course.
China's ARJ21 an equivalent to the Japanese MRJ have already delivered 100+ airframes with 300+ more on order.
The bigger C919 has made its delivery, and currently has 583 on order
Japan's approach may look better on paper
"35% of Boeing 787 is made in Japan"
But without the ecosystem, the Japanese do not know the "Unknown unknowns" of aircraft manufacturing.
With millions of components, the civilian passenger jet is one of the most complex machinery
C919 was the first step among many
The next step for China, is to increase the Chinese components in the C919 and the upcoming long-range C929.
Core components such as the Chinese CJ1000A turbofan engine:
As Chinese Comac passenger jets, take market shares from Boeing and Airbus,
China's CAAC's Type Certificate will be much more influential
This will form a triopoly between EU's Airbus, US Boeing and Chinese Comac
The A.B.Cs of civilian aerospace industry
