“The owner of the defunct Indian Point nuclear facility says it’s planning to dump about 1M gallons of radioactive water into the Hudson River. The move, which the company describes as the ‘best option’ for the waste, could happen as early as August.” gothamist.com
It appears corporations won’t be doing anything at all to protect or consider human health going forward, while they pollute & destroy as much as possible. When the poorest 150 million Americans hold only 2% of the wealth, corporations get to do whatever they want. Enjoy.
Ah yes, the “normal practice” justification. This little gem has been trotted out a lot recently, to minimize and excuse everything from massive chemical disasters to train derailments to shooting shit out of the sky.
But the community will get “at least a month’s notice before any radioactive discharge.” So generous!
“Over time, PCBs have contaminated nearly 200 miles of the Hudson River and beyond into New York/New Jersey Harbor, making it the country’s largest Superfund site.” darrp.noaa.gov
Not sure if the trustees continue to “invite the public to submit restoration project ideas,” but I think preventing one million gallons of radioactive discharge is a good start.
But we’re told the “best option” is dumping it into the Hudson, because it’s faster and cheaper.
I would like everyone to note mainstream media IS NOT covering this—at all—much like they haven’t been covering the Ohio chemical disaster, much like they haven’t been covering Covid.
People don’t care about things they never hear about.
“Exposure to toxic effluents including radionuclides poses a serious health and economic risk to communities up and down the Hudson River and can have negative impacts on real estate values.” theexaminernews.com
Holtec is also seeking to dump contaminated wastewater in Cape Cod Bay.
Dec. 2022: “The 1.1 million gallons of water was used to cool spent nuclear fuel rods, and contains both radioactive and non-radioactive pollutants.” wbur.org
“Please sign and pass along this petition to STOP the dumping of radioactive waste into the Hudson River.” h/t @NSVann change.org
