RudramahΓ£laya a temple complex was built by Siddhraj Jayasimha in the 12th century & destroyed partly by Ulugh Khan in AD 1297-98 and partly by Ahmedshah in AD 1415 & converted into a mosque.
However, as per an agreement between trustees & Archeological Survey of India declared the mosque as a national monument and its maintenance and protection were taken over by them.
One of the terms of this agreement was that the mosque would continue to be used by the Muslims for offering prayers.
Somehow this community never stays satisfied. The Trustees of the JΓ£mi Masjid complained the ASI isn’t doing its job properly of maintaining the MΞΈsqΟ…Ξ΅.
As ASI started its renovation relics of the temples and also the rich sculptural carvings on the two wings of the mosque got unearthed. These exposures got the attention of Hindus.
Hindus demanded
1. these ancient temple relics be preserved
2. mΞΈsqΟ…Ξ΅ should no longer be used by the MΟ…slims for prayers
3. Hindus be allowed to worship the Siva Linga discovered during the excavations within the mosque.
Hindus have always tried to save their temples. A Hindu man, Yogeshwar Dutt led a huge crowd into the mosque and instigated them to usurp it & demanded that Namaz in the Jama Masjid should be stopped & also incited the Hindus to demolish the mosque.
Since then several riots have happened to claim the complex.
