The New York Times is an extremely overrated publication.
A lot of the stories are simply inconsistent from top to bottom. If you have critical thinking skills, you don't come away with the sense you can trust the reporting.
(That's just putting political preferences aside.)

I've lived in Russia and worked there as an editor. There is some truth to this story, combined with a lot of unsubstantiated claims and pro-war propaganda from a U.S. perspective.
