Principles of Counter Attacks.
If you are able to outplay overload situations efficiently, you are independent of the quality of your players. This makes counterattacks a powerful weapon for underdog teams.
The first 5 Principles I teach my players to outplay the defensive:
#1 Change the Mentality
We want to behave as a unit. Therefore, everyone in the team needs the same idea in their mind at the same moment. Anticipate ball wins. Every fraction of a second matters.
Everyone attacks, not just the strikers. If we lose the ball, we need the midfielders and defenders to defend again immediately.
#2 First run outside and create a 2v1
The defenders are outnumbered and will close the center first. Therefore, our runs should be to the outside. Use the space outside to create a 2v1.
Common mistake: No runs to the outside β†’ less options β†’ Dependent on dribbling skills of the player
#3 Minimal width
The wider, the slower the attack.
Simplified Situation:
the defender has a lot of time to shift and block the way to the goal:
Examples:
#4 Timing: Pass in the moment of the highest speed of your teammate.
Counter Attacks are no isolated 2v1 Situation. If you wait too long, the defendersif you wait too long, the defenders will close the open space.
Use the speed advantage of the opponent. The defenders have to turn around first. They are at a disadvantage even if they are closer to the goal.
#5 From outside back to center β†’ Diagonal passes.
If you have options in the center, then pass to the center.
Complete:
Anticipate β†’ Run Outside first β†’ Create 2v1 β†’ Minimal Width β†’ Timing Pass
