MANCHESTER United 3-0 Leicester City- Wout WEGHORST and Victor LINDELÖF- Player ANALYSIS 🧵
There is so much to analyse after Manchester United’s 3-0 win against Leicester City, but I will focus on the impact of Wout Weghorst and Victor Lindelöf in particular. Let’s get started! 👇
Wout Weghorst- United’s 3rd goal
Wout played a crucial part in another goal, this time United’s 3rd goal against Leicester. Wout’s run pulls Faes out of position and this space is exploited by Jadon Sancho.
Sancho and Bruno eventually play a one two, and United score a brilliant goal. Without the movement from Weghorst, the space does not open up for Sancho.
This isn’t the first time either!
Palace 1-1 (A) - Wout’s run towards the box opened up space for Bruno’s goal.
Leeds 0-2 (A)- Wout’s run towards the near post opened up space for Rashford’s header.
See more about Wout’s run against Leeds below 👇
He might not be the player who’s currently scoring the goals, but he’s playing a HUGE part both directly and indirectly in the goals United are scoring. Furthermore, with Ten Hag often playing him in midfield he’s adding a more physical element to our midfield.
As I said, Wout is contributing directly to United chances and goals as well. He got the assist for Garnacho’s goal away at Leeds and he could have had an assist here for Sancho, who had a great chance. Wout’s awareness, coupled with Jadon’s intelligence🔥⬇️
Wout isn’t facing towards goal here but finds a nice pass into Jadon’s path. His technical ability goes under the radar at times, along with the amount of space he’s creating for others in behind. Important team player- he’s developing nice relationships with our forward players.
Against Leicester there were many examples of Wout’s pressing, getting back into defensive positions and making key tackles. One of these was Wout’s slide tackle on Iheanacho in the first half. Any defensive contribution is vital, but this action was even more vital than usual 👇
In the first half, Iheanacho was dropping into pockets of space just in behind United’s midfield players, which was often dragging Martinez out of position. On one particular occasion Iheanacho managed to turn away from Lisandro.
Here, you can see Martinez on the ground, he is maybe over aggressive and sometimes in these situations a player with elite technical ability can cause you problems, that is what Iheanacho was doing in the first half.
However, Wout sees Iheanacho advancing towards United’s goal and makes a key tackle. Wonderful defensive work rate, especially important in this scenario when our CB had been caught out of position.
I also want to talk about Victor Lindelöf. He has a reputation of sitting off attackers and not engaging in duels as often as maybe Martinez or Maguire do. But there was a clear difference in the second half from the first half and previous games of Victor.
These two actions sum it up perfectly. Firstly, Leicester look to counter having regained possession from United, but look how aggressive Lindelöf’s positioning is, not just him but also United’s rest defence as a whole, seemed to be much more effective and compact.
Lindelöf makes the challenge, the ball rebounds, and Lindelöf again looks to be aggressive and slides in on Jamie Vardy, in the next tweet.
This is just another example of a United player clearly adapting their game slightly to suit Erik ten Hag’s system. We’ve already seen Diogo Dalot improve the aggression of his defending under Ten Hag, now Lindelöf, in this 2nd half in particular. Hope to see more!
