Visa officer: how many schools did you apply to & how many of them accepted you?
Before I tell you why they’re asking this question & how to respond, pls & pls, do not say you applied to only one school bcos you & I know you didn’t & the VO too knows you didn’t! 🚩

Visa officers believe your answer to this question will test your honesty & also give them an idea of how qualified you are to study in the US. They sometimes erroneously think that if you’re admitted to high caliber universities then you’re perfect. This may not always be true.

In any case, you should be honest in answering this question bcos they can find out if you lied & you’re not gonna get that visa.
So if you’re not confident about the ranking of your potential university, I suggest you do not apply to them in the first place.

Ideally, applying for graduate school means you’re interested in research which means you should be targeting research intensive institutions called R1 universities.
So how do you respond to this kinda question? Here’s my response:

“I applied to 8 R1 universities and was interviewed by two. I got accepted into all the two with full funding.”
