It is very irresponsible for a newspaper like the Seattle Times to allow an anonymous source to level incendiary accusations that cannot be verified in any way since no names, institutions or dates are mentioned.
This anonymous Dalit source claims that as a recent Grad student in America she found that other Indian students preferred room mates from the same caste, that Grad students only recommended other students from the same caste to their Profs for RAs.
This is just an outlandishly false allegation. I came to America in the mid-90s and my grad student room mates were from different regions of India and hence presumably from different castes (I didn't know their castes and no one asked each other about that).
There is absolutely no way that caste would be a factor in recommending someone for a job or RA. The comments claimed to be from her Boss sound like something someone might say in a Bollywood movie about caste discrimination in rural India decades ago not in an urban workplace.
I am forced to conclude that the journalist has become a dupe of motivated anti-Indian and anti-Hindu activists. For all I know the complaint might not even be from a Hindu Dalit woman it might be a Khalistan supporting Sikh woman or a Pakistani Muslim woman.
Dear @HinduAmerican please reach out to the editors of the Seattle Times to protest this article. It seems a violation of basic professional ethics of journalism to allow such incendiary allegations to be published without any evidence with everything being anonymized.
The journalist here has almost certainly been duped by motivated actors.

....incendiary slurs an explanation of what level of diligence you have done to verify the fantastical claims of "Maya" or even her identity as a Dalit Hindu.
