They made only the object of ridicule the way God had taken to benefit them. "Whereunto then shall I liken the men of this generation? and to what are they like??" (v. 31) This is the word. What can I think of to fully illustrate their absurdity? These are like children sitting
in the marketplace. The children in the marketplace do care not at all about serious matters but are full of desire to play whenever they can. God does everything possible to benefit them. But, like the children in the marketplace, they dismissed the whole action as a joke, as
if God were playing a joke, and treated it as nothing more than a spectacle. Many are destroyed because of this. They are the ones who can never be sure that they are sincere in the affairs of their souls. The old people sitting in the Sanhedrin were just like the children
sitting in the marketplace. They cared not for the things that belonged to eternal peace, as men care for children's games. How wonderful is the folly and vanity of a blind, ungodly world! The Lord awakens them from their repose. The phrase โ€œWhereunto then shall I likenโ€ was a
common rabbinical preface to introduce a metaphor. โ€œThe men of this generationโ€ mostly refers to religious leaders (7:30) and refers to those who rejected John the Baptist and also rejected Jesus. Jesus condemned their attitude with these words. They took a hostile stance on
everything Jesus did or said. They were cynical and skeptical because Jesus challenged their comfortable, self-centered lives.
โ€œthe men of this generationโ€; According to some scholars, the 'generation' (Genea) refers to the Pharisees rather than the whole of Israel. However,
although the Pharisees may be included in the word 'generation', the term does not apply only to them. Rather, this should be seen as referring to a generation that rejected Christ's salvation (see Matthew 11:20-24; 13:53-58). In these words is hinted at the unbelief
of Israel and the wrath of God that would befall it.
