Marathas espionage techniques in the 1st Anglo Maratha war
These included:
1)Using local Fishermen,cowherds & peasants
2)Directly infiltrating spies in the guise of peasants into the Brit camps
3)The Maratha spy network in Bombay was under Chintamani Dixit (cover: a merchant)
4) Other techniques for gaining info included Interrogating enemy troops
5) Pindaris were also used to capture British non combatants(eg a muslim boy or a merchant in the Brit camp) to gain other info like food supply
6)There are numerous instances of the capture of Brit spies.
7)Lastly Maratha vakils(diplomats not lawyers) were present in all major courts in India ranging from Delhi to Mysore to Hyderabad to even the EIC. These vakils provided Marathas with a steady stream of info.
Excerpt from Lala Sevakram's (vakil in Brit camp) despatches to Poona
This is in contrast with the intelligence failure in the 2nd war where almost all European officers in maratha service defected causing unfathomable damage to the Marathas. Had Nana Fadnavis been alive one doubts if this would have been the case
