As a scholar, delving deep into politics in the context of democracy does more harm to you than good. Safety lies in maintaining the status of being a scholar. It is more honorable.
We are witnessing a painful reality of how democracy is being used as a tool to break the ranks of scholars of the Deen. To be a sincere adviser to those in the position of authority on how to lead with competence and fear of Allah is better than being partisan.
Allah united this Ummah under the banner of Tauheed, political parties have disunited them. Tauheed is no longer the basis of determining and establishing brotherhood rather political affiliation.
Once upon time, scholars were known to people through their adherence to Tauheed and Sunnah and their hatred for Shirk and Bidβah. Sadly, today most are known through their political affiliations. The Ummah is now left to discussing the political affiliation of scholars.
When will we wake up! Scholarship and partisan politics do not go hand in hand, you choose one. You are either a full blown politician or a scholar that sincerely advises politicians on how to look after their subjects because they are their flocks.
The only voice that unsettles a politician is the voice of a sincere scholar. So, once they win the scholar over, his voice of conscience remains muted&then the politician gets to enjoy the freedom of his political sphere. Hence, the scholars are convenient tools in their hands.
The aftermath is that the message of Islam that the scholar is known for will now be viewed through the prism of his political affiliation which now provides a breeding ground for the rejection of his message that was formally welcomed. Itβs a big loss for the scholar & the Ummah
When a politician gives a scholar money, he makes sure he leaves a trail behind for others to know that he has done so. So, he pitches the people against the scholar by buying off the scholars and making the people aware of that.
Wake up and be intelligent and know that politicians are experts in silencing dissenting voices. They could to that passively or actively. Passively by drawing the scholars closer and providing them with largesse in order to control their conscience and to mute their voices.
May Allah grant us pious and competent leaders that have all it takes to lead a fragile and complex nation like Nigeria.
