These are 3 inscriptions where Gowda is used in the sense of kula/jathi.

2nd from Chikkamagaluru
3rd from Davanagere
Gowda was used as a title as well as alternate name for the Vokkaliga caste historically. 1/4
Even today the Vokkaliga branches found outside Bayaluseeme (South KA, plateau region) are known as Gowdas.
Eg: Arebashe Gowdas (Coorg), Tulu Gowdas (Dakshina Kannada), Kappili Gowdas & Anuppa Gowdas (Tamil Nadu). Even Badaga Gowdas in Nilgiris have origin as Vokkaligas. 2/4
Vokkaligas must not be apologetic about using Gowda as alternative name for the caste (as its already used colloquially). It has strong historical roots.
In fact Gavunda itself might etymologically be Kapu + Ganda as inferred from this inscription. 3/4
Kapu (meaning protector) is also the name of the great body of Telugu cultivators.
It’s also interesting to note that some Vokkaliga branches in Tamil Nadu are called Kappiliyans or Kappilia Gowdas/Gounders. 4/4
