The past few months I noticed we have been having lot of people dying from Stroke.
It is alarming
I came to a conclusion that we need to work hand in hand with the public to increase survival

First problem is a lot of people don't even know what a stroke is
Simple. Stroke happens when Blood to the Brain is cut off. This can actually be because blood vessels burst (Hemorrhagic) or it is blocked (Ischemic)
This cuts off blood to the brain & that Brain part can die

Now the problem is A lot of Nigerians don't recognize when this happens.
Every minute wasted , the Brain dies.
If more people can recognize a stroke and get the patient to a hospital. We might have survival
Symptoms
- Face deviating to one side
- Weakness of hands & legs

- Sudden loss of consciousness
-Difficulty in maintaining posture
Others can include Dizziness, Vomiting, etc
The key here is once you see any of this. RUSH TO A HOSPITAL
Within the first 4 hours . Many things can be done

The number one cause of Stroke still remains High blood Pressure (Hypertension)
Lot of people don't know their blood pressure. A simple Blood pressure check and good management will have saved a lot of people from dying.
Most didn't take their drugs or stopped clinic.

There are some risks we cannot really change
Family history of stroke, A previous stroke is another risk for another stroke, Old age
Some we can change Obesity, Diabetes, Alcohol, Smoking, High fat in the blood, Some heart diseases

The problem with Nigerians is BECAUSE of our religions, we start praying and take them to church hoping for recovery.

PS- Most of the patients that spent a great deal of time in religious homes actually died after presenting late

Another top cause of Death was FOOD.
As a rule when you suspect a stroke. PLEASE DON'T FEED AT ALL.
Why?
When someone has stroke , the swallow reflex can have problems, if you feed. Food can go into the Chest
Food in the Chest gets infected,& Most die from the ASPIRATION

A lot of times because families have fed them ,patients come to the hospital with terrible chest infections.
These infections reduces the life span and becomes so difficult to treat.
This still remains one of the leading causes of Death from complications.

Another major problem was transportation
Even the people that recognized the stroke, there were no ambulances to transport . A Lot chattered cabs and some patient even had Head injury from inappropriate mode of transport.
We need the government to provide ambulances.

It is a known fact that when someone has a stroke, we need to do A Brain imaging called CT SCAN within 4 hours
We don't have enough CT Machines in Nigeria. More than 70% of government hospitals don't have CT. Even most of the ones that have they aren't functioning .

Some states don't even have CT machines.
Patients have to travel to another state entirely to get their Brains scanned.
Some of these patients are in Coma and Unconscious, some of them die during transportation due to poor road networks and bad transportation means.

Another major problem was accessibility to good Healthcare
It is so sad what Healthcare has come to in Nigeria. Due to the exodus of Healthcare workers. There is a paucity of Brain specialists (Neurologists)
There are few Neurologists in Nigeria & bound to reduce every second

We have few equipped standard Stroke centers in Nigeria.
I have only seen One Standard Equipped Stroke center in Nigeria (Name withheld)
A stroke center isn't just any hospital treating any condition but a center that is dedicated to handling Stroke and similar cases.

This is clarion call to the government , private investors, private individuals, NGOs , Media, public.
There is a pandemic of people dying from Stroke. It is time for us to build and invest in Stroke care.
Younger people are also dying from Stroke.
We need to address this

I don't know how far this will go but if there are private investors, NGOs, Multinationals , government bodies & officials who see this & are ready to pool funds to address this.
