What you need to know about the Russian military presence in Transnistria.
▪️ 60% of the inhabitants of Transnistria are Russians and Ukrainians. They sought to secede from Moldova even before the collapse of the USSR, fearing joining Romania.
▪️ In 1992, after an attempt by the Moldovan authorities to resolve the conflict by force, Transnistria became de facto beyond the control of Chisinau. Russian peacekeepers were introduced in 1992 under an agreement signed by the presidents of the Russian Federation and Moldova.
▪️ The agreement is terminated if one of the parties withdraws from it.
▪️ Joint peacekeeping forces (from the Moldovan, Transnistrian and Russian military) entered the security zone. Now there are about 1200 of them.
▪️ About 400 Russian peacekeepers are also part of the Operational Group of Russian Forces in Transnistria.
Their task is to guard the ammunition depots in Kolbasna (translated as Sausage on the right picture 🤣)
▪️ Moldovan President Sandu is actively in favor of the withdrawal of Russian peacekeepers. In her opinion, the situation in Transnistria is an obstacle for Moldova's European integration.
