On eve of Ahmedabad foundation Day tomorrow, we tweet the history of Karnavati today. According to authentic history books, Ahmedabad is not Karnavati. It is true that Ahmedabad was founded on adjoining open ground near Karnavati.
In 1094 AD Gujarat king Karnadev Solanki defeated Ashapalli's Bhil chieftain Asha Bhil. Karnadev founded "Karnavati" city near Ashapalli. He built the temples of Kochharba Devi, Jayanti Devi & Karneshwar Mahadev & Karnasagar lake here.
In 1094 King Karnadev crowned his son Jaysinh Solanki as Gujarat king & he went to Karnavati to live a retired life. Karnadev died there soon.11th century Ashapalli/Ashaval/Karnavati was situated on Sabarmati river bank near Calico Mill, out of Jamalpur Darwaza-gate of Ahmedabad.
In the 11th century, Ashapalli/Ashaval/Karnavati was a major city & 2nd capital of Gujarat. In 1411 AD Gujarat Sultan Ahmedshah decided to shift his capital from Patan to a place adjoining Karnavati as it was a strategic place on routes of Gujarat.
In 1411 AD Gujarat Sultan Ahmedshah not changed the name of Karnavati but he founded a new city Ahmedabad on open flat ground, adjoining north Karnavati/Ashapalli/Ashaval city. The foundation brick of Ahmedabad was laid by Saint Ahmed Khattu on 26-2-1411.
In 1411 adjoining city Karnavati was ruined by Sultan Ahmedshah to build new city Ahmedabad. Houses & temples were destroyed for building materials for Ahmedabad. Ahmedabad first Masjid Ahmedshah Masjid in Bhadra was built with stones from ruined temples of nearby Karnavati city.
According to great historians of Gujarat Ratnamanirao Bhimrao Jhote,Hariprasad Shastri & Ke.Ka.Shastri (founder of Vishva Hindu Parishad), Ahmedabad was not Ashaval/Karnavati.Ahmedabad & Ashaval (Karnavati) were co-existed for 162 years after foundation of Ahmedabad in 1411 AD.
People always adopt popular names for cities. In 11th century Gujarat king Karnadev Solanki renamed Ashapalli/Ashaval as Karnavati but people did not accept it & forgot it. It continued to know as Ashaval till 1573 AD. It is mentioned as Karnavati in few Jain monks' books only.
There are historical evidences that Karnavati/Ashaval existed up to 1573 AD at end of Gujarat Sultnat. Thereafter it vanished due to the development of Ahmedabad. It merged with Ahmedabad's suburbs in Mughal rule (1573-1758 AD). It was between today Behrampura & Shah Alam area.
