STOP building dashboards that just explore data
START building dashboards that answer business problems
Here's how:
/🧡/
C.A.P.
Context, Audience, Purpose.
Use this acronym for asking the following questions
1/ C – Context
What important information does the dashboard need to communicate?
What background details are relevant in the creation of the dashboard?
The context of this dashboard is to understand the overall Airbnb rental business in New York.
How to approximate nights booked, Types of Airbnb rooms, Neighbourhoods in New York, etc.
These are some background details needed.
2/ A – Audience
Who is the intended audience of the dashboard?
Executive or Manager or Analyst?
Executive - They need a strategic dashboard to track KPIs.
Manager - Operational dashboard to keep them informed about day-to-day activities.
Analyst - Analytical dashboards process data to identify trends.
Here the audience is a Real estate investor.
Therefore a strategic dashboard that shows the KPIs to select potential neighborhoods is apt
3/ P – Purpose/Goal
What business questions does the dashboard need to answer?
How important is each one of these questions/problems?
What information is needed to answer the problems?
The dashboard helps the investor to take decisions about
Which neighborhood to search
What type of properties to consider
How competitive is the Airbnb rental business in NY?
Often, we spend a lot of time learning data visualization tools like Power BI, Tableau, Qlik, etc.
But we don’t spend time analyzing the Context, Audience, and Purpose.
This makes you get stuck while building dashboards and I have experienced it too.
That's a wrap!
