(let's do a little thread shall we)
The Equal Rights Amendment is a radical proposed amendment to the Constitution designed to β€œend the legal distinctions between men and women.”
That means treating women like men, ultimately punishing women (and men, read on)
Liberals want to frame the ERA as a win for equality: Men & women have same inherent worth! This is how they get a slew of weak Rs to vote with them
The real question: Is it prudent to treat men and women identically? To treat women as men? History, & majority of women, say "no"
Phyllis Schlafly β€” who beat the ERA the first time around β€” argued the differences between men and women are substantial enough that treating them as legally the same would have monstrous consequences for women.
Some examples:
a) The ERA would end all sex-segregated spaces β€” including prisons.
Even today, most Americans still recognize the need to keep the male rapists out of female felons’ cells.
Poll from 2020:
b) Motherhood would be penalized in the job market, particularly in terms of paid maternity leave.
When you require equal compensation, the net result is less leave for women, since most biz can't afford to have both men & women out for months at a time.
When you treat women and men identically, society merely adapts standards to favor more feminine characteristics, enabling women to succeed but feminizing men in the process.
We've seen this especially in higher education, but also pop culture (e.g. Harry Styles, etc)
I argue the solution lies in celebrating the differences between men and women:
