The different variations Erik ten Hag's #mufc used to bypass Barcelona's press & progress the ball.
A Thread ๐Ÿงต
Barca was using a hybrid pressing of man & zonal oriented but more to the former. So committing fully man to man could've had a big issue vacating crucial spaces behind & in the center which could've affected them badly as Yanited had threatening players to deal w such team's.
So Barca's approach was a hybrid one but still, there were some minor issues that Ten hag exploited in the 2nd half. Which was baiting the press in a good manner in interchanging of positions & roles in opposite movements.
AWB pushing high pinning the opp LB, #18 dropping deep occupying his position to facilitate & aid progression while dragging opps out of position, #19 moving infield to create the passing lane from #1 to #18, Antony tucking as an inside fwd btl exploiting the space.
a vid might be handy to explain it better so here it's.
Playing over the block to bypass pressure and find your outlets in a 2v2 qualitative superiority higher up the pitch.
This time the pass was directed towards AWB as Antony was dragging the opps deep demanding on the feet while the former was moving high. He didn't manage to get the ball but we won the 2nd ball & the inform Rashy created a half chance out of it.
Here they were disorganized, Roberto pressed #19 leaving AwB for balde who stepped out high, #19 then passed it to Bruno who managed to find #29, in the meantime #19 was moving high to exploit space,#29 won his 1v1 duel & finds #19 who arrived in a crucial position to find Antony
Here's how it panned out;
Creating a micro transition in a quick build-up exploiting the opposition's disorganized block playing through and around to then find your players, particularly the outlets in a qualitative, positional & dynamic superiority.
The reasoning for Casemiro's movement to drop deep and occupy the RB's role in the build-up wasn't only to drag oppositions with him creating space but also to use his strength which is his long-range incisive passes when facing play.
Using Up-back-through passing schemes to progress play quickly in transition
Just like the others this one has also been fascinating bar the final actions.
Combining with patience after a throw-in, finding the team creative hub over the top by the GK, rotating to occupy positions, and sustaining pressure well.
We were incredible in baiting the press & in our well-rehearsed movements with freedom while maintaining a compact structure to deal with turnover. There's lot of room for improvement in the final balls tho.
