I was laughed at for saying Antony is one of the best dribblers in the world.
Listen, there’s a clear disparity that must be learnt here - dribbling is not 1v1 quality. Antony lacks speed to reliably beat players in 1v1’s, but his close control dribbling is utterly elite.
Antony’s press resistance is particularly useful because he rarely gives the ball away. That means he can get United up the pitch, offer his team control by being a technically secure focal point (like Bernardo for City), and subsequently improve the collective.
He’s invaluable.
Antony retains the ball like few in the world. If a player gives Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford and his other teammates more opportunities to attack, then they are very valuable. The more United keep the ball, the more they can create, push the opposition back, press high, etc.
The same people who don’t rate Antony berate Bernardo Silva for his lack of output. Their contribution is selfless, and it’s for the TEAM.
If you judge them based on their output, prepare to be disappointed, but that’s your issue for misinterpreting their profiles.
Or Jack Grealish. He’s just like Jack Grealish. He can cut inside and curl one into the top corner or arrive at the back post to finish off a move, but it’s not his primary role, unlike lots of other wingers.
This limits their ceiling relative to the elites, but they’re still 🔝
