Regional Rapid Transport System (RRTS) — is a reliable, fast and regional mass transit system that will connect major cities of Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh to Delhi with a high speed rail network.
But why is it needed when Delhi has the best metro rail system in India?
But why is it needed when Delhi has the best metro rail system in India?
Because Delhi is not just the capital of India— it’s also the migrant capital of India & this puts pressure on its infrastructure.
How? See, Delhi will soon overtake Tokyo to become the world's most populous city.
But population growth is not the problem, population density is.

But population growth is not the problem, population density is.
Delhi has one of the highest population densities in the world — it’s getting congested day by day.
This is because, every year, lakhs of people migrate here to study or to work & most of them come from the neighboring states.
Moreover, population and pollution go hand in hand.

Past few years have been very tough on Delhi due to increasing pollution.
One of the main reasons why it tops the list of most polluted cities in the world is vehicular emissions.
Because of the trend of buying more personal vehicles, 73% commuters use personal vehicles only.

Some of the main reasons, often, for not using public transport are irregular service, overcrowding & lack of last-mile connectivity.
Clearly, Delhi will face negative consequences unless the neighboring regions will contribute and help alleviate the burden on the capital city.

This train of thought led someone to think
— why not use trains like the Delhi Metro to connect cities around Delhi with it?
This led to the genesis of RRTS, and explains why it’s such an important project for NCR.

The system will cater to passengers looking to travel relatively longer distance with fewer stops and at higher speed — along a dedicated path.
Designed at Alstom’s Hyderabad engineering center and manufactured at Savli, Vadodara (Gujarat), these trains are 100% indigenous.
And at lightning fast speed of 180 kmph, they'll be 3 times faster than the Delhi metro — making RRTS trains the fastest in India.

The Planning Commission has identified 8 corridors and prioritized three corridors namely Delhi-Meerut, Delhi-Panipat and Delhi-Alwar for implementation.
Delhi-Meerut corridor is expected to be operational by 2025 and its construction is estimated to cost 4 billion US dollars.

Now let’s try and understand how its impact goes beyond revolutionizing NCR’s transportation system — to ensure a balanced and sustainable urban development.
👉 MULTIMODAL INTEGRATION
This is the core principle of RRTS.
👉 MULTIMODAL INTEGRATION
This is the core principle of RRTS.
It’s being designed in a way so that commuters can move from one mode of transport to another without exiting the station.
Sarai Kale Khan RRTS Station (the largest on all corridors) will connect commuters to various means of transport like buses, metro, rail, and road.

Because of this, the overall productivity of the region would be enhanced, improving the overall economic activity in the region.
While simultaneously saving people’s travel cost and time — thus increasing their disposable incomes and quality of life.

👉 DECENTRALISATION OF OPPORTUNITIES & DISTRIBUTION OF WEALTH
Due to its high-speed connectivity and high frequency(5-10 mins), there will be reduction in migration to Delhi and the pressure it puts on the city.
People won’t have to live in Delhi to be able to work in Delhi.

👉 POLLUTION CONTROL & DECONGESTION
Delhi-Meerut corridor passes through one of the most densely populated regions of NCR.
Once operational, it may take 1 lakh vehicles off road and the share of public transport will increase from 37% to 63%.

The number will go up as more corridors open up, and this will reduce CO2 emissions in the city by 250,000 tons every year — thus improving the air quality.
👉 IMPROVED SAFETY FOR WOMEN & WORKFORCE PARTICIPATION
The average rate of women’s workforce participation in urban areas in NCR is 11.5% compared to the national average of 15.0%.
We are well aware of the societal constraints on women.

They are encouraged to choose the safest option in their career.
Traveling on public transport is a nightmare for any woman.
But RRTS will have the same effect that Delhi metro has — the level of security and safety provided by metro to its female travellers is unprecedented.

👉 GENDER-NEUTRAL TOILETS
Transgender people remain outside mainstream development and often face issues due to lack of gender-neutral toilets.
RRTS pilots the design of public toilets that serve as a blueprint for socially inclusive and universally accessible public toilets.
