Sorry, don't want to hear any complaints about Messi winning Player of the Year in a period where he had 79 G+A in 74 games and won the World Cup scoring 2 in the final and contributing to 10 goals overall.
Anyone else would win with that resume. Simple as that.
In 2002, Ronaldo won the Ballon d'Or. He had 10 goals and 5 assists in all competitions with Inter Milan and Real Madrid over the course of 2002, but won the WC scoring 8 times and assisting 1.
And don't even get me started on Cannavaro in 2006, so let's not move the goalposts here.
Based on the criteria that has been established for ages, Messi is a thoroughly deserving winner.
