The Jaw Titan: Call of Silence
(A thread)
Part 3 of the Nine Titans thread covers two things
The song itself: Call of Silence
And why it connects to not only the Jaw Titan concept of Ymir Fritz
But the entire story of Attack on Titan
Ymir was a cornered girl who saw herself and humans as beasts
But she had a call
Call of Silence is my favorite in Attack on Titan
Behind its simpler lyrics is a powerful story of finding oneself through the love of the Other
The deep longing and frustration to connect with a person
All in the context of Season 2's love confession
From one Ymir to a Christa
The Jaw Titan is a machine of war
Modified over generations, the Jaw was Marley’s vanguard in its conquests and can only be seen for what it is called for
This nature ties to Ymir Fritz, the original Titan, appearing to her people as both a convenient slave or a beloved goddess
However, even with its powerful, useful jaw, it was rendered mute just like Ymir was when she lost her tongue as an Eldian slave
The only word she can say is the act of service she must render
But it is in the Silence where Ymir finds her fullest self
Ymir’s Call of Silence began for humans ever since we were born, from the cry for attention to be fed
However, growing up, she knew she could only reach to Others through actions and that made her cage
To be known with reason, her actions must have a function convenient to others
In silence, she could only serve to be known
In her heart, she called out in the space where she could not find the Other…for someone to “find her”
This was the reason for every single action taken by this mute character, from releasing the pigs to loving an abusive king
Season 2 had a hidden theme spliced between the Warriors' and the Colossal Bertholdt's resigned betrayal and Freckles Ymir’s empowering self-affirmation…that of “finding someone.”
This theme has a name in the anime: the song known as “Call of Silence”
Realizing how "real" this Other world felt, that they were "the same", the Warriors longed for someone to save or judge them, to see them for their being too
And I do not think it is a coincidence that this was the same desire Ymir shared, a desire Eren exposed in Chapter 122
Ymir’s means “scream”, a fundamental expression of pure emotion
Without a tongue, Ymir cannot scream
But as a Titan, a hushed growl
Sad that Ymir tries to “speak” only to be what the world designed her to be
God, the slave of human desire
Even to the audience, she was a function
One day
A couple share a kiss
She saw it as love by its intimacy, its ability to connect the self to the Other and be human
Having not even fellow slaves to bond with, she wanted to be noticed
She could be whipped for breaking a vase but it and she would be forgotten
So she made her Call of Silence
She became the worst girl in the world and made her first Scream
Even without a tongue, everyone heard her when she opened the pen of pigs
The pigs yelped in joy at their freedom while Ymir looked on at the uncertainty
Of hope
Or
Another hell
Whether this was the original sin or not, she was now judged
This is the only way forward
People finally saw her, not as one of many slaves but as a girl who did something for herself
Her disobedience was the first free act of any human
No one told her to
She did it
She wanted it
Yet she was silenced
Then she saw Power
Her second cry was heard
She found a person but was another prison
Need for connection made her stay a slave
She knew not the freedom of her cry
Even the cries of her children BORN into this world made her want to keep the BOND alive
She believed, for the sake of her own joy, that she was loved
And she did love
She gave Fritz an Empire, daughters
Yet his eyes turned to others, prosperity, women, children
It changed when a "hero" lunged at the Beast
Her third cry came
Enough with the silence of being set aside
But again, she was silenced
The flower that bled reminded her of her tragic fate
Ymir was consumed to preserve her Titan being.
She became the Founder to create all other Titans
For 2,000 years, love eluded her
Rationalized as a function, even as she kept holding on
Every Titan was born from a scream.
Just as Titan physique is from the magnification of the human body and the strength and photosynthetic ability of trees, so do their origins
@ColdCriti pointed out the scream activates the Titan serum within but only with a clear goal in mind
Like Ymir, every Eldian that descended “into Paradise”, including Freckles herself, did not want to die and be nothing
So the Power of the Titans gave them an undying body and like Ymir, were imprisoned in a long nightmare, anguished by the new life they have no participation in
Calling in silence to be free by seeking the Other
Perhaps the longing for connection is why Titans seek Shifters
Each of the Nine holds a part of Ymir’s being, thus being vessels of memory
By taking a branch of the Tree of Life
A Titan momentarily awakens as the original person
The girl who owned up to Ymir’s name, Freckles, had her own Call of Silence
Facing certain death and to be disposed of, Freckles owns the name Ymir, a function of her cult no more but now her own being
A second time, she screams, becoming a Pure Titan, searching for liberation
Silenced for 60 years, feeling as if she lived a long nightmare
But her third, reaching towards Historia, for her to love herself.
Freckles’ Jaw Titan was the only one to talk, albeit with limitations
Yet it shows she was the freest to speak her heart
For someone heard her call
While a big miss, the anime changed Freckles backstory dialogue to focus on her self-lie yet it reflects Ymir too
She wasn't punished for freeing the pigs
But she chose to cage herself in the lie and not escape the nightmare of love
Unable to hear her heart's or children's cries
When Freckles first woke up as the Jaw Titan, she recognized herself this way: a mere chunk of flesh in a meaningless world that can scream and flail
The girl (Female) found by slavers viewed herself and all life as Beasts but…to her, this space is why the world is beautiful
Freckles and Ymir were small, lost Girls, insignificant to a world without meaning but they are still here and somehow can know themselves
A fundamental lesson in anime: we are all born empty but it is not bad
Being empty means we can construct ourselves and own our decisions
Society defines good and evil by their function
But emptiness reveals cruelty and beauty altogether at their barest, most personal and perceivable
It may be why Eren's scenery of freedom was an empty plain
Alone, Ymirs and Erens can be their surest selves
But is that all life is?
The Jaw's narrative was a realization of the meaning of the Call of Silence
Every scream may be a Call to a Silent, empty universe but this was where the self is born
It knows itself as "mere screaming flesh"
But a scream must be heard
Just as a person must be known
Must be loved
To be Ymir is to scream, to be heard but the empty world cannot respond for that is where freedom is
And to live, one must not stay in the emptiness
But keep moving forward
Only those who keep moving forward know what is beyond the plain empty world
But what if, in the void, a chunk of flesh would scream and someone hears her voice?
Rather than give that flesh a function, they dedicated their hearts and wish to share the same space?
Even if it was in the iron cage Eren saw in Paradis
We just need to make our own stars rise
