Here's the fascinating (and hilarious) story of how a random Fort Lauderdale auto shop blew up and went crazy viral on TikTok:
Clancy's Auto Body is a local auto shop based out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida
And until about a week ago, the vast majority of the internet didn't know who they were
That all changed after this video was posted from their TikTok account:
By the numbers:
β†’ 21.2M views
β†’ 4.1M likes
β†’ 13.7K comments
β†’ 34.4K shares
Even better?
This wasn't a 1-hit wonder. They kept going...
And since that first viral TikTok, they've had videos hit:
β†’ 11.9M views
β†’ 3.1M views
β†’ 2.3M views
And a few more that have cracked the 1M mark
Here's an example:
TikTok flooded Google to leave positive reviews (to the point that Google had to monitor the reviews 🀣)
And the auto shop now has a TikTok community that has named itself...
"Clancy's Cult"
Now, why did this blow up?
There are 3 strategies that the SMM at Clancy's executed well:
1) Platform-specific humor
'Unhinged' humor isn't a necessity for social media success, but it sure does help on TikTok
The SMM has done a great job leaning into meme templates and the type of humor TikTok loves
The fact that a video like this is 'what works' on TikTok makes some ad people's heads explode
🀣 But this is where we're at
Lotus Cars is another great example of a brand that excels using 'unhinged' platform-specific humor on TikTok
2) Create characters and storylines for the brand
The social media manager does a great job of working other employees at the auto shop into TikToks as characters
Like 'boss man' and an employee in the body shop
It's like a 'reality show' for the brand
Here's an example:
If your brand has a physical location or retail space:
Documenting and creating content around your team can be a great way to entertain and stand out on short-form video.
@jtbarnett has been talking about this for a minute 🀝
3) Capitalizing on a viral hit
Will they hit another 21M view video?
Probably not
But the SMM has done a great job going hard on TikTok and racking up quite a few 1M+ view videos in the wake of the original viral hit
They found an angle that crushed and ran with it πŸƒπŸ»β€β™‚οΈ
Of course, I know there's someone (probably some old dude in advertising) whose internal monologue is yelling "but how did this improve bUSinESs MetrIcS??"
And you know what??
That's a valid question, in this case.
They’ve started to post some product-related content to their TikTok, which I love to see.
The social media manager was also able to get the founder on camera to answer FAQs from the comments section, which is even better.
This builds trust with the audience.
But, I think there are also some strategies they should focus on to maximize the return they are getting on this virality...
If I was Clancy's SMM, I'd set up their IG ASAP to start to capture more of the hype from TikTok
IG is more likely to drive appointments booked than TikTok, so getting some content up there to convert some of the traffic should be a priority
And right now, there's nothing there
A few things I'd do right away:
β†’ Add a booking link and phone # to their IG bio
β†’ Create some IG story highlights of services and testimonials
β†’ Repost some of their TikToks to see if they pop off on IG
IMO IG should be a mix of viral content with some more sales focus.
The biggest fumble right now is that there's unnecessary friction between seeing the brand's viral TikToks and booking an appt
Right now, the viewer has to go on Google and search for the auto shop
Getting some sort of phone # or booking link up should be the #1 priority.
But also... we can just enjoy an absolutely hilarious and amazing TikTok rise to fame. Just let people enjoy things.
The SMM crushed this and could have potentially changed an entire business's trajectory overnight.
The power of this app never ceases to amaze me.
