HOW TO LEARN SOMETHING FROM EVERYONE YOU MEET:
~MINI THREAD~
James Joyce said he never met a boring person in his life.
How can that be true? How is it possible to go through your entire life and never—not even ONCE—meet a boring person?
I’ll give you a hint:
It has NOTHING to do with the other person
And EVERYTHING to do with YOU.
The interestingness of a person is entirely dependent on your perception of them.
If you think someone has nothing interesting or useful to teach you, then that will be the truth—and you’ll write them (and most people) off as boring.
But I suggest you do something different:
Every time you interact with someone—no matter how “boring” they may appear—try to get INSIDE their head.
Try to understand what it’s like to be that person.
Everyone you meet sees “reality” in an ENTIRELY different perspective than you.
Getting inside the mind of someone else is as bizarre as a psychedelic trip.
Try to discover:
-What do they think is true?
-What do they believe about the nature of the world?
-What do they believe about themselves?
-What do they believe about you?
-What thoughts occupy their mind most of the time?
-Are they scared of the world or do they embrace it?
There are an infinite number of puzzles to solve within each person.
You will learn more than you ever thought possible from doing this—and your capacity for empathy will skyrocket.
Everyone has something to teach you—you just need to find out what it is.
