A handful of the same seed (the seeds are all the same. The only difference is the ground) fell on a rock (shallow soil). The roadside was almost dirt free. However, the seeds that fell on the shallow soil began to grow. Fields of this kind would have been found in every
farmer's field. Most of the land of Palestine was rocky and full of stones of all kinds. The soil on top of the rocks holds moisture, so plants can grow easily, but they cannot take deep roots. Then, when the hot sun dries the water, the young shoots wither and wither because
there is no moisture. In 8:13, Jesus explains that those who have this kind of heart hear the word and at first receive it with joy. But like many of his followers, when trials come, they fall away. Falling directly on rocks is no better than falling by the wayside, and the seed
will never be able to rise.
โ€œAnd some fell upon a rock;โ€; Matthew (Matthew 13:5, โ€œSome fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up because they had no depth of earth:โ€) or Mark (Mark 4:5, โ€œAnd some fell on stony ground, where it had not
much earth; and immediately it sprang up because it had no depth of earth:โ€ Occasionally, there is a rock, and it refers to a state in which the soil is thinly covered on the rock. In such a land the seed sprouts and grows a little, but because there is little water and no
nourishment, when the sun rises (Matthew 13:6, โ€œAnd when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away.โ€) will soon wither and die.
