Awesome Meghalaya is really really AWESOME! One of the best holidays we've had.
Thread:
I never read travelogues, because I wanted to be there rather than read about it. However, when to go and how much it'd cost were definitely questions. TLDR: Nov-Feb, Rs 1.5L (for 3)

Travel itineraries are dime a dozen on the net (or chatGPT).
However, some interesting things observed during the trip.
It was Election time & there was a lot of buzz. People hated hung assembly but issues were so diverse, that they resign themselves to hung one yet again

We made a short trip to Ma Kamakhya temple in Guwahati, but mainly because I wanted to see the Mighty Brahmaputra - a legendary river because of the direction it takes (older than Himalayas) and a river which had fascinated me more than any other river since childhood.

We were a trek-happy couple till the kiddo happened, and its been relaxing beaches ever since. Now that he had just turned 8, it was time to introduce him to the fascinating world of trekking, starting with the spectacular and relatively easier trek of Laitlum canyon.

I used to love spotting constellations at night, and with 'progressive civilization', completely lost the art of watching the skies.
However, fell back in love during the dazzling and stunningly clear night skies at Mawlynnong - the cleanest village in Asia.

The real reason anyone was even interested in Meghalaya to start with was the social media razzmatazz of 'Dawki' - a clean river/lake where you could see the river bed.
Only this time, the marketing is 100% true with its absolutely crystal clear water. Had a great swim!

Cherrapunji was the stuff childhood dreams were made of (highest rainfall in the world wow!). And the trek to the double-root-bridge in Cherrapunji was a BRUTAL but incredibly SATISFYING 9 hour trek. Treks become difficult when returns are uphill and this was steep uphill

What one MUST definitely do, is not just stop at double-root bridge but push and push (because it's a difficult trek) to go and see the rainbow waterfall as well as the blue lagoon.
The blue lagoon is so spectacular with its clearest of blue water - we were stunned

Trek started at around 9AM;hit double-root 10:30;hit Rainbow waterfall 12:30;swam in Blue lagoon at 2:30;came back to original destination at 6PM. Insanely up-and-down,steep-uphill-downhill trek, that sapped our breath and tugged our muscles. The kiddo braved through it all

Cherrapunji had the highest rainfall (now second to Mawsynram) but given highest rainfall one would expect a lot of sloping houses. Yet, almost all houses have a flat terrace. Only reason might be to 'retain optionality' of building a 2nd/3rd floor.

One of the really disturbing things all around Meghalaya was incessant mining of mountains endlessly- anywhere you go,you'd see mining of mountains.
What's an ecological disaster or two, in the face of march of mankind's progress I guess. This one is of a mountain-gone-WIP

We also got caught in the (in)famous Shillong traffic for 2 hours & made back to the airport just in time.
Rule-breakers exist, but in much lesser%. Also heard that any non-ML regd. vehicles parked w/o driver during traffic jam are pushed down the mountains mercilessly :O

In summary, loved visiting Meghalaya. The terrain is very harsh, weather harsher (hot, cold, rain), very poor infra&most towns didn't have internet till 8 yrs ago.
But now, Insta-mania exists.
Fab scenic views and stunning treks. Can't live there, but absolutely must visit! The End.
