Hospitals🏥
They aim for two things: Maximum patient comfort and such that the patient doesn't have to stay for long (ALOS) while at the same time doing it profitably (ARPOB). There are many ways that a hospital does this, but the most effective way: Better equipment/procedures.
Today we are going to discuss one such piece of equipment that almost every top-tier hospital is going for. Before that, let us first discuss one of the important terms I mentioned above: ALOS.
ALOS or average length of stay is the average number of days an inpatient stays
in the hospital for treatment. Say there are two patients. Now, every hospital tries to get ALOS down, as it increases the bed turns (no. of people getting treated during the same period per bed). For this, one of the most effective ways is to install better equipment.
One such piece of equipment is the Davinci robotic surgery system: Medanta, KIMS, HCG, and Artemis everyone is now installing Davinci in their facilities. Now it's not like Davinci is an old robotic system for surgeries. But the adoption has been pretty late in India.
So what is this Davinci surgery system and how is this better than the conventional robotic surgery systems we have now? Here are a few advantages:
- Greater flexibility (more degrees of freedom), leading to higher precision cuts and operation.
- Very high magnification
of the operating field (better visibility)
- Minimally invasive, so the patient comes out with less trauma, leading to faster recovery and faster discharge.
- Covers a wide variety of laparoscopic surgeries - Urology, oncosurgery, transplants, etc.
Look at the following video that describes how efficient Davinci has been in surgeries:
There's a reason why Davinci didn't find its place in Indian hospitals till now. It's pricey: the costs can range from 10-15 crores, and this ultimately leads to higher surgery costs. However, some hospitals like HCG have found a way around it as well. For example, HCG
doesn't buy the Davinci, but signs a pay-per-use type contract with the manufacturer (Intuitive surgical) or a revenue-sharing model. This makes the device kind of an OPEX on the PnL and not a CAPEX: keeping the balance sheet light. Q3 concall of HCG extract below:
To operate the Davinci, the clinicians have to go through a training program. The concall also covers how Davinci devices are better, but that's too long to post here. I would recommend that you give the Q3 con call of HCG a read for some superb insights!
I came across Davinci when I heard it from @AdityaKhemka5 sir in a Twitter space, and it's amazing to see the adoption of such amazing devices in our hospitals.. beneficial to both the patients and the doctors.
That's it from me folks! Thanks for reading.
