Cerebrolysin is a neuropeptide that improves the brain's ability for self-repair by stimulating neuro recovery.
It has numerous pharmacological effects, which will be listed below
Pharmacological effects:
- Protection against excitotoxicity
- Reduction of free radicals
- Reduction of pro-apoptotic enzymes
- Modulation of inflammatory effect

Protection against excitotoxicity
-Overstimulation by L-glutamate damages neurons
-Cerebrolysin inhibits this
Reduction of free radicals
-Free radicals are involved heavily in Alzheimer's and strokes
-Cerebrolysin is shown to greatly reduce the formation of free radicals following an ischemic event
Reduction of pro-apoptotic enzymes
-Apoptosis is cell death
-Cerebrolysin reduces the number of neurons capable of this
Modulation of inflammatory effect
-Blood clots that lead to stroke cause the endothelial cells to become inflammatory
-Cerebrolysin reduces the cytokine storm that causes this
Improvement of BBB integrity
-The blood brain barrier is damaged by fibrin deposits and loses permeability
-Cerebrolysin improves the BBB by promoting vascular integrity via Ang1, VEGF, and SHH
Ang1 (angiopoietin 1) promotes blood vessel remodeling and maturation
VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor) promotes blood vessel formation
