In the dataset from Wuhan, they found evidence of 2 viruses: one was a novel MERS-like virus (HKU4), the second was the new virus with the MERS spike swapped in. WIV & EcoHealth are known to have created MERS-HKU4 chimeras using a MERS backbone with an HKU4 spike/2
This work undermines the Proximal Origins argument that SARS-CoV-2 couldn’t come from a lab because only a known, published backbone would have been used. It also debunks the argument against lab engineering, which was based on fact that SARS-2 backbone not previously published/3
It supports that SARS-CoV-2 is “totally consistent with lab engineering” and a lab-based origin for COVID-19 is “totally plausible.” The data also show unpublished & risky GOF research with no medical applications is going on in Wuhan (and likely lotsa other BS-3/4 labs.)/4
