I've been following the same Kazakh family on their 140km spring migration across the Altai Mountains of #Mongolia for the last 8 years.
This year I shot the whole trip on my smartphone.
Here are some photos...

Nomadic families in Western Mongolia often combine their herds to drive them for 5 days over the mountains. There's safety in numbers.
This is one of the longest single nomadic moves in the country. They corral sheep, cashmere goats, cows, yaks, horses and camels.

It's cold in February & every year some of the animals don't make it or have to be carried on horses, camels or in the back of vehicles.
This year temps ranged from -36℃ at night to around -15℃ during the heat of the day.
That's without the wind chill factor of course.

I've spent a lot of time with this family. I also visit them every year at their summer camp.
Over the years I've watched their kids grow up and leave home for the towns and cities.
They don't want to come back to this lifestyle.

This year, for the first time the father talked about giving up herding.
"If your son doesn't want to follow in your footsteps then your options are limited"
We're all looking for a healthy balance between hardship & convenience.
It's an eternal struggle in my experience.
