Cybersecurity has a wide range of areas and much depth, this thread will help provide you with some guidance that may help you.

Here are some observations that I see challenging for many people who are working towards their career in Cybersecurity.
❗ For those in Cybersecurity, please feel free to add any additional information to help ❗
📣 First, you should have a solid foundation in IT (Coding/SysAdmin/Networking) and understand general business functions.
✅ Next, determine your Cybersecurity area of interest. If you are unsure, here are some areas you should research:
Technical: Enterprise, Networking, Cloud, Development, Analysis, etc...
Policy/Compliance: GRC Governance Risk Compliance: Policies, Regulation, Standards, Risk Management, Frameworks, etc...
✅ Learn Cybersecurity fundamentals such as the topics found within the ISC CC, CompTIA Security+, or SANS entry-level certifications such as the SEC275 or SEC301, or even EC-Council CEH program..
Once you have the foundational knowledge, it is important to begin working on developing the skills required by the positions in your area of interest.
How?
After you have identified your area of interest, research the various positions within the area, and review the required skills and knowledge needed for the position. There are paid and free resources available in every area of Cybersecurity.
🌟 Choose what works best for you whether it means paying and investing in yourself, or taking a free course. I recommend doing what is in your own best interest.
🤔 It is important that you apply what you have learned by developing projects as you learn, and by participating in BugBounty programs, CTF Contests, and Ethical Hacking platforms..
Below is a list of resources for showcasing your projects and knowledge:
- GitHub
- Write a Blog
- Create your own YouTube channel
- Publish PDFs
- Provide content on LinkedIn/Twitter
- Publish your content on your own website
- Participate in BugBounty Programs and CTF Contests and Platforms
- Participate in posts, meet-ups, and conferences. Also, look for other opportunities to share and showcase your knowledge.
🛑 Avoid enrolling in too many courses or inconsistencies, if you are learning, finish the course before beginning another course.
🛑 Avoid information overload, and develop a set of skills before moving on to others.
✅ Update your resume and practice interviewing to develop your hard and soft skills.
✅ Network on LinkedIn/Twitter and look for local groups to develop your professional network.
It is important to use your network to identify people at a company of interest to learn more about the company and make contacts.
In today's job market, applying for a position puts you in a pool with multiple candidates.
Give yourself an advantage by using your professional network to help you find your next opportunity.
Stay focused and keep working towards your goals.
Persistence, Dedication, and Consistency are key, you can achieve your goals, never stop!
- THE END -
