@MrsEmilyFinch @RuggieriJulia It seems there are two bills. One would dramatically lower the threshold to recall a DA from 30% to 2% of signatures. The other would create an oversight panel, supposedly to reign in DA’s who are corrupt or incompetent.
The DA in Georgia is an elected official in each county.
@MrsEmilyFinch @RuggieriJulia I generally always support upholding the authority of elected officials. Philosophically I believe they are more accountable to the people than to some board or commission. However there have certainly been legitimate cases of prosecutorial misconduct. From a NYT article on the
@MrsEmilyFinch @RuggieriJulia bills:
In the past, some Democratic state lawmakers embraced the idea of creating an oversight commission for prosecutors; they had been concerned about possible misconduct by prosecutors in the case of Ahmaud Arbery, a Black man who was chased and murdered in 2020
@MrsEmilyFinch @RuggieriJulia by three white men in a South Georgia neighborhood. A Democrat introduced a bill in June 2020 that would have created such a commission, but it did not win support from the Republican leadership.”
I think the 2% recall bill sounds like a straightforward attempt to intimidate
@MrsEmilyFinch @RuggieriJulia prosecutors and should be opposed. On the panel oversight bill I’d say the devil is in the details. There may be something workable there, perhaps even something bipartisan, depending on how it plays out.
