This week I talked to someone who lives on a farm in the middle of nowhere and has done billions of dollars in created revenues.
As a young dude with 2 kids, young family, and success early on — I enjoy older peoples viewpoints because they’ve been beat up enough to develop wisdom.
Wisdom is hard if not impossible to get without going through fire.

Youth brings energy & age brings finesse.
Anyways — I’m talking to him about the last couple of years and he’s asking about the last time I lost it all. Common theme…

I share some areas where I’ve had to start over and he goes “Good, very good — that’s where you learn your lessons.”
I said, “Doesn’t that suck?”
He says “No it doesn’t suck… it’s just the way life works and you have to get used to it. You learn the most at the bottom.”

He went on to share moments & lessons he’s had and why, in his 50s he is happier and more joyful than ever, doing exactly what he wants and loves to do and nothing more/less.
His kids are happy and healthy and life looks like he always wanted it to look.

That is who I want to be…
I realized from our talk how much of our self worth comes from things that (a) have nothing to do with our self worth and (b) we have zero control over.

It’s a difficult place to be in when you’re trying to ‘chase’ something external to get somewhere internally…
That never works, it makes us FEEL like we’re progressing but in reality — where it matters most — we’re moving AWAY from our goalposts.
We all want to be unique.

To matter.
To work on problems that we care about and that other people will benefit from…
Almost all of that comes from an internal state not external validation.
The end of the conversation was the winner:

“You have demonstrated on this call that you recognize you are alive… 70% of people do not and they aren’t even aware that they don’t recognize it.”
The fact that this was recognized as a win means I do not think enough — cause I’ve never actually thought about that as a competitive advantage.
In hindsight, though - it is true.
If you realize you are alive, you have an advantage.

Sometimes that’s the only advantage you need 💪
Let’s crush.
