This is how Shri Virupaksha is written in Modern Telugu: శ్రీ విరూపాక్ష.
This is how it is written in Modern Kannada: ಶ್ರೀ ವಿರೂಪಾಕ್ಷ.
Anybody can see it resembles which modern script!
Like Udaipur Ranas, Vijayanagara kings believed they were deputies ruling on behalf of Shiva
This is why the Vijayanagara rulers signed their inscriptions with the name of Shiva Virupaksha.
This is the signature of Vijayanagara kings.
Is this closer to modern Telugu script or modern Kannada script? People who can read both/either can leave their opinions in comments.
The script you are referring to as "Old Kannada script" is also called "Old Telugu script" by historians like KAN Shastri.
Feel free to call it old Telugu . Or call it Old Kannada. What's in a name?
But it is exactly the same script. That is my point
When asked the question, a section of readers identified the script as Kannada script. Another section of readers identified it as Telugu script.
The fact is that this script is ancestor to both modern Telugu and Modern Kannada scripts.
As such, it shares features with both.
Calling it "exclusively Kannada script" or "exclusively Telugu script" when it is ancestor to both the scripts is factually incorrect. It shares features (and differences) with both .
This only shows how close and unitary we are. There is no scope for emphasizing differences.
