Indian songs winning Oscar is not indicative of a sudden efflorescence of Indian performing arts, but of increasing awareness of India thanks to the Indian diaspora and rising soft power
We always had great artists. But the world back then associated India with snakes & charmers
So the real winner is not Song X or documentary Y
But the rising influence of India thanks to increasing economic prosperity, emigration and export of culturally influential human capital
Back in the 60s/70s, our pop culture could not even be marketed on its own terms. But translated in a western idiom
When Dev Anand produced "The Guide", he also produced a separate version of it in English (which was horribly done). Even subtitles weren't around!
Another example being MS Subbulakshmi singing some terrible English song at the United Nations...
A classic example of an underconfident culture incapable of marketing itself
The confidence has emerged as a result of economic prosperity and success of several Indians from a humble background in the West
Which has resulted in a quiet self confidence and assertiveness
