Once upon a time, Goddess Parvathi used to wake up in the mid of night and used to go alone. One day Lord Shiva got up and noticed this behavior. In order to know where she goes in the mid of night, he follows her.

After following her, he finds that Goddess Parvathi goes to a SuduKaadu( Smashaan in Hindi), takes the fierce form of Katteri and she starts to dig out dead bodies and all the half burnt bodies and eats it fiercely.

Seeing this behavior of Parvathi, Lord Shiva gets worried and when he enquires about this, Parvathi Devi acts normal.

So to end this violent behavior, Lord Shiva, the next day digs out a hole in the path to Sudukkadu and covers it with dry grass. So the next night when Parvathi goes out , she takes the form of Katteri and she falls into the hole.

Lord Shiva extends his help to Parvathi by saying he can help her to come out only if she is willing to leave this fierce form in the hole and come back in normal form.

So Parvathi than agrees to the condition and does the same and thus she tells whoever worships her in the Mayaanam ,will be blessed.

Its said that only her true devottees can worship her with ( not everyone like you & me) . People worship her only at night & thus the eldest woman in a family carries a lamp followed by other pooja items by other family members to her temple.

When people see a family going to worship her, no other family will try to come ahead of worshipping family & should not even talk to them.
Worshipping family has to dig a hole in front of her temple & place all pooja items like a black saree, black bangles, black Bindi etc

Then they sacrifice a black rooster and mix it with rice and offer it to her and she is also offered with many other non veg items cooked from a black rooster or black sheep/goat.

Post the pooja, some prasadam is distributed among the people( not to outsiders) and than the rest is buried within the same hole and only the next year the hole has to be dug out.

Even while returning, the elder lady will carry a lamp and come and post that they will again wash their houses with water. Post this only other neighbours and relatives can speak with this family.

So intense and ritualistic is her worship and itβs believed that if one follows all the rituals correctly, than she blesses that family or person with the wish or if done in wrong way, ill will be brought upon that family.

Its said that one can invoke Katteri for both good & bad deeds; some people invoke her for witchcraft etc which also brings fear among general people.
All forms of Katteri are not fierce like the Paal Katteri who is often offered veg foods.
