Volcanoes have been making headlines recently, showcasing their power and unpredictability. πŸŒ‹
Here are 10 recent volcanic activities from around the world that have caught our attention.
1.Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano erupted again on January 5th, 2022, providing a spectacle for visitors to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. No Big Island communities are in danger.
2.Mauna Loa, the world’s largest volcano, erupted for the first time in 38 years on the Big Island of Hawaii. The recent 2022 eruption is the 34th since 1843.
3.Two volcanoes in the Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia, erupted recently, among the six volcanoes showing signs of increased activity in the region along the β€œRing of Fire.”
4.An underwater volcano erupted in Tonga, creating tsunami waves and heard even 2,383 km away.
5.Mount Nyiragongo volcano in the Democratic Republic of Congo led to thousands of residents fleeing towards Rwanda in east. The government has launched an evacuation plan for the eastern city of Goma.
6.The La Sourfriere Volcano located on the eastern Caribbean island erupted after decades of inactivity, forcing thousands in the surrounding villages to evacuate. The volcano had been dormant since 1979.
7.The Sangay volcano of Ecuador erupted in March 2021, ejecting clouds of ash up to 8,500 meters into the sky. It is the most active volcano in Ecuador.
8.Mount Sinabung in Indonesia erupted in August 2021, firing ash and volcanic materials as high as 5,000 meters into the sky. It has erupted multiple times since its first eruption in 2010.
9.Indonesia’s Mount Merapi erupted in November 2021, forcing authorities to halt tourism and mining activities on its slopes. Its last major eruption in 2010 killed 347 people and displaced 20,000 villagers.
10.Yellowstone Caldera, a "supervolcano," has the capacity to "produce a magnitude-eight eruption on the Volcanic Explosivity Index, discharging more than 1,000 cubic kilometers [240 cubic miles] of material." Its last major eruption was around 640,000 years ago.
