If you f*ck up, avoid these 8 mistakes that will make it worse:
-thread-
Hey gang, Proper here
I am dealing with a staff who was caught using marijuana at work.
This was not an easy conversation, but I learned a lot about them.
It allowed me to observe the person's
Actions
Emotions
Defense mechanisms
And how they handle pressure.
Sadly, this person utterly failed.
However, let's see what you guys can learn from his failure.
Let's get started.
Mistake #1: Didn't own up to it
Hey, we all make mistakes.
Life entails it.
Just try not to
Cover it
Delete it
Act as if it never happened.
Own up to your terrible blunder.
Had he just owned it, the conversation might have gone differently.
Mistake #2: Waited
This person should have told me right away.
Instead,
I had to hear it from others
Resulting in me having to write five different reports.
Don't make sh*t more complicated than it has to be.
Inform them right away!
Mistake #3: Snitched
This individual then chose to snitch on others rather than own their trash.
And snitching does nothing but establish your:
- Culpability
- Selfishness
- Unreliableness
It is never worth it.
Mistake #4: Lacked Honesty
I still wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt despite everything.
I wanted to think there was another factor at play.
Such as:
1. Financial stress
2. Relationship issues
3. Mental Health issues
Unfortunately, this person put up an emotional wall.
Later, I discovered this person had lost a loved one.
If they had been truthful, I would have made an effort to support rather than correct.
Mistake #5: Didn't Anticipate Failing
This person believed he was flawless.
Naturally, he had a difficult time coping when he was busted.
He refused to:
- Accept it
- Take Responsibility
- Fix the issue at hand.
This led to further issues...
Mistake #6: Didn't Learn From It
He began spiraling
And making further mistakes such as:
Arriving late
Increased sick calls
Exhibiting poor teamwork
Kept repeating the same errors
He was not mature enough to take this experience as a lesson.
In the end, I severed ties.
Mistake #7: No support
This person inevitably began to shut down and turn inwards.
He tried to fix everything himself while ignoring everyone who offered to assist.
He felt alone and blamed others for his problems.
No one wanted to support him anymore.
Mistake #8: Damaged relationships
The good news is that this individual is improving.
They got in touch with me, asking for their job back.
Sadly, it was too soon; I still did not have faith in them.
Once you burn a bridge, they become complicated to repair.
Summary:
Mistake #1: Didn't own up to it
Mistake #2: Waited
Mistake #3: Tried to take others down.
Mistake #4: Wasn't honest
Mistake #5: Didn't expect to fail
Mistake #6: Didn't learn from it
Mistake #7: No support
Mistake #8: Damaged relationships
Do the opposite of my staff if you want to prevent things from getting worse, and you will be alright.
