It's not a good idea for everyone to own land, because not everyone is qualified to own land.
Land is a scarce productive resource, and the whole of society benefits or suffers based on how it is worked and managed.
The American mentality where everyone dreams of...
...owning a plot of land is a result of the extremism of feudal Christendom, where a small aristocracy and the clergy controlled all of the productive land and ultimately abused the power that came along with it.
As a result, the American dream is now for everyone...
...to own a small plot of land and become a little feudal lord.
This relates to the concept of sovereignty. Christendom assigned sovereignty which truly belongs to Allah azza wa jal to human beings. Rather than fixing this problem by recognizing that sovereignty...
...belongs to Allah azza wa jal alone, Christians decided to distribute these sovereignty more equally in the form of democracy. Land ownership patterns are a reflection of this.
Sharia achieves the goal of democracy, which is preventing abuses of power through checks and...
...balances, through other more sustainable means. Awqaf is one of the major ways this is accomplished, where the use of land is independently determined by pious individuals seeking the acceptance of Allah and comfort in the grave.
This model of land use is less subject to corruption, because the one bequeathing the waqf dedicates it knowing that the person most beloved to Allah azza wa jal is the one who is most beneficial to the people, not seeking any worldly gain.
The awqaf collectively also employ...
...many people, providing another sphere of economic activity to counterbalance private and public sector activities, reducing the risk of a communist-type state monopoly, or a Western-type corporate oligopoly.
