Once again, some brothers bent on “exposing deviants” tweet clips cut out of context so people get the wrong message.
This lecture which has conveniently not been sourced is a 20 minute lecture made 13 years ago about generosity. It isnt about how all religions are true.
Salvific exclusivity isnt the meaning of his words here at all. What he means by exclusiveness is the belief that there is absolutely nothing of truth in other religions which is false. What coincides with Islam or is a general universal virtue like generosity
is also found in other religions and believing otherwise is naive. That is SHY’s point and he brings it all back not to justify other religions but to have a group of kuffar consider that Islam also brings these truths and the Prophet Muhammad (saw) should not be dismissed.
Compare the two clips below DH cuts it in a way that totally cuts out the first part of his point. Hamza Yusuf is telling non-muslims that the Prophet Muhammad has been defamed and neglected by the world and should
be listened to and considered like other religious figures are considered and listened to. He isn’t saying that hinduism, buddhism, christianity or judaism are true religions and he definitely isnt saying Buddah and The Prophet (s) are on the same level.
To further cement this point SHY proceeds to bring multiple examples from the Quran and Sunnah
on the emphasis and philosophy of Muslims on generosity. I may not agree with all of his wording and think that perhaps he wasnt considering the inclusiveness
he was talking about would be twisted by charlatans over a decade later but he definitely does not mean what these brothers think are true. When you are an extreme literalists or uncharitable out to call everybody a zindiq or kafir you tend to fall in the area of injustice.
You can criticize SHYs method that its too vague and people may get the wrong message but its clear as day what he means if you actually listen to it along with his other statements on perrenialism like this one:
