Positional Play isn't simply about static positions.
It's how to adjust your position to create favorable conditions to attack.
Let's break down this Arsenal Build-Up
๐Ÿงต๐Ÿ‘‡
There's a lot going on in this picture.
It's interchanges (2 players change positions) and rotations (3 or more players change positions.
When you simply view it from fixed positions, it's hard to wrap your head around it.
However, when you look at this situation as the team is responsible for occupying certain areas it's more manageable.
1. Threatening space behind the back line
2. Pin outside backs wide (width)
3. Provide passing options through middle.
4. Provide passing option behind (depth)
โ˜๏ธ Those four objectives serve as individual principles for players to help guide action towards the collective intention, which would be the team principle.
Perhaps the attacking principle is to exploit space in front of the back line to exploit space behind the back line.
What's important is when observing a fluid type of football like this to attempt to decipher potential intentions.
Which spaces seem to be important?
What seems to be the objective?
Through this process, you can reverse engineer the behaviors you are seeing.
The ultimate goal is to learn from top football.
To attempt to figure out the first principles of football that could be applicable at all levels.
By doing this, you are learning about the a football WHAT instead of that team's specific HOW.
