Dear PG Students,
Recap of my weekly postgrad and research family meeting: Research proposal part 5 (24 March 2023).
1. Timeline section of a research proposal (the tasks and the phases)
2. References (in-text and bibliography)
@researchinked
1. Timeline section of a research proposal is for 2 things; the tasks and the phases/stages of research. The purpose of the timeline section of a research proposal is to subtly let the institution and your supervisor know that you do not plan to be a "forever postgrad student".
This section is crucial for several reasons. It is used to provide insight into how each task will be started and completed. It is a section that depicts your personal "commitment and deliverables" and strategy including time (months) allocation to each task.
In addition, this section allows you to indicate how each phase of the task will be accomplished. In the timeline section, you must ensure that you fulfill your side of the "academic agreement" by submitting the drafts timeously.
It is beneficial that you do everything humanly possible to meet these set deliverables and avoid being under pressure to meet the deadlines. The institution wants you to keep the system clear hence avoiding any "perpetual stay". Be accountable to yourself.
Referencing (in-text and bibliography)
The in-text references are located across the different components in the proposal draft. References are for you to acknowledge the sources of your information. In research, credibility, authenticity and
reliability of your sources is non-negotiable. You can cite recklessly or try to impress anyone with the number of your references.
Points to note on references:
1. Cite what you read
2. Cite articles from reputable journals
3. Cite established authorities or prominent voices in your research niche
4. Be familiar with the topmost journals in your research area of interest.
5. Cite according to the faculty or departmental requirement (referencing style)
6. All citations in your in-text must be in the bibliography
7. Allocate significant citations to recent articles. I belong to the 30-70 school of thought ie 30% (>5 years) and 70% recent (<5 years)
On this note, I want to thank all those who attended (my esteemed weekly family members) and some friends (@AaronAkpuPhilip @olumuyiwaayo @Dr_MD_MPH @drjmuruthi @matajson @phillip4real @B_Blastitude @SNakande @tosin_olaluwoye @Dr_K_Mthimunye who always join me on stage.
For your sacrifices and interest. It is never easy on both sides as I had to conduct some of my weekly family meetings in the "dark" because of load-shedding.
I hope you will make the most of the quality of the information that I have given you in the last 5 weeks on a Research proposal.
See you next week as I start a new series on Literature Review
God bless you all.
E seun, Enkosi, Dumela, Siyanbonga, Daalu, Saawa, Obrigado.
🙌
