Short-form video is a money-printing machine.
But most brands forget this 1 factor that’ll make or break your video: setting.
How to choose a 5-star filming location:
1 — Go ‘texture hunting’
Look for textures and patterns that will add depth to your background.
• A brick wall in an alley
• Ornamental tile in a church
• Vines growing down an old wall
Textures are the videographer’s paintbrush. Use them to paint a masterpiece.
2 — Weave a ‘color story’
The best directors identify their desired ‘mood’ before they choose a set.
Look for a color pallet that aligns with your brand’s message.
For example:
• Apple keeps it minimalist and futuristic with monotone
• Google leverages bright colors to convey creativity and innovation
Leverage your setting to create a brand identity across multiple videos.
3 — Look for a power source
This is the lifeblood of your shoot (literally).
Make sure your location meets the power requirements of all your equipment (lighting, cameras, sound).
If you must, compensate with battery powered equipment or generators.
4 — Analyze the acoustics of your location
Look for locations with:
• Natural reverb
• Natural soundproofing
• Low background noise
Save yourself hours of wasted time in editing by getting sound right the first time.
For example:
• TEDx Talks uses old theaters and churches that provide interesting reverb
• Postmodern Jukebox leverages outdoor acoustics to transport their audience to a different time (they perform vintage-style covers of popular songs)
5 — Harness natural light
The best videos work with natural light, not against it.
If you’re outside:
• Leverage the ‘golden hours’ (first and last hours of the day) for beautiful portraits
• Leverage mid-day sun (hard light) for dramatic scenes that require deep shadows
6 — Choose settings with emotional resonance
Nothing keeps your viewer invested like emotional involvement.
What emotions are you trying to convey?
• A sports arena creates excitement
• A beach instills calmness
• A playground evokes joy
Bring your viewer on a journey.
