Emotion = narcissistic supply, mass fodder for manipulating peoples perspectives & shoring up tribal allegiances. That’s why any mass shooting is jumped on by demonic ghouls in media, as an *opportunity* to facilitate increased psychopolitical manipulation on a partisan basis.
Memory is closely encoded with emotion in the brain, the more emotional something is, the more *sticky* it is in your memory, in your worldview. If media types can glue their partisan narrative to the emotional force of massive tragedy, they secure your loyalty at ballot box.
I’m not exempt from any of the things I describe. I try to be level headed & I was already in deep disagreement with the left by this point, but vilification of Nick Sandman in January 2019 was probably the point at which it hit home for me on a gut level. It has stayed with me.
Likewise the brutality of BLM violence in 2020 will stay with me for life. Sure I had already broken with the left & had my reasons, but watching them terrorise, tyrannise, burn down innocent peoples businesses & pretend like it was morally acceptable affected me in a primal way.
That’s why every goblin with a microphone starts spewing garbage the moment something generically horrible & non partisan occurs eg. a pandemic, a mass shooting, etc. The partisan *value* of it is too high to pass up. Can’t let it go to waste! (If you’re morally depraved that is)
The other aspect about the stickiness of emotional memory is that you remember the feeling, and the generic action item, or the villain/victim, and no matter how false that story turns out to be, it’s almost impossible to undo in peoples brains, because the *emotion* was real.
This is why many people will argue idiot stupid bullshit until they are blue in the face, even though evidence to the contrary has disproved their “memory” unequivocally. Because the emotion they felt & remember was real. That’s why they are so convinced the narrative is correct.
I don’t have any advice for how to remedy this clusterfuck. FWIW I remain skeptical and open minded about any breaking story until details are confirmed, and I try to read as much as I can about background circumstances, law, history, so that I’m not as vulnerable to emotional…
